Black Mold and Your Health

Mold detection in the home has become quite a competitive business, particularly on the internet, where there’s a variety if do-it-yourself mold testing kits available. Many of them have included within a means to send a test back to the lab for identification. Is it black mold? Does it pose a danger to the humans and pets in the house? The MoldCheck™ Test Kit will help you find out which room or rooms might be the source of mold contamination.

Once found, it’s less vital to know what kind of mold it is, simply because any mold contamination should be dealt with regardless. Despite this, you’ve no doubt heard the term “black mold” being tossed about on the net, and how it is allegedly the most dangerous kind of mold.

Black mold (Stachybotrys) can be found in homes and offices as it can colonize easily on such surfaces as dry wall, carpet, wall paper, ceilings, and insulation, just to name a few. Contrary to popular belief, this type of mold does not grow on either shower tiles or vinyl or concrete surfaces. Yet this kind of mold can run rampant from causes such as storm damage to plumbing mishaps, and the health effects can be dire if the contamination is not remedied swiftly. Certainly, there are variations within a population, as some people may be more susceptible to the health effects of black mold than others, but there it’s still important to keep the potential risks in mind. They can include: sore throats, flu-like symptoms (including headaches), chronic fatigue, nose bleeds, hair loss, depression, immune system suppression, and pulmonary hemorrhage or pulmonary hemosiderosis, particularly in infants.

So, while the health risks of black mold contamination are very real, there will be those companies that instill a sense of panic for unwary customers. A few simple steps can be taken in lieu of panicking. First, determine the extent of the black mold/mildew, or any mold growth using your eyes and a do-it-yourself kit such as the MoldCheck™ Kits. Second, locate the source of water that is causing the moldy surface to be wet or damp. If it is not obvious, use the Mold and Moisture Investigation Guide™ in your MoldCheck™ Test Kit. Lastly, create a safe black mold clean-up plan. If you are curious to know that the mold you have is, indeed, black mold, than you might consider purchasing our Tox-Check™ Mold Testing Kit, which will allow you to sample some of the mold and send that sample to our laboratory for identification.

We at MoldCheck™ hope that you, your family, and your pets, can be content to occupy a mold-free living space!
