How To Test For Mold

While a certain amount of mold will make its way into any home or living space, there are certainly a number of circumstances that can lead you to believe that actual mold contamination has occurred. You might find that there is that distinct musty smell that is often associated with a mold problem, or that individuals within the home are experiencing symptoms such as coughing or labored breathing, and as a result, you suspect that there may be mold contamination somewhere within your home. At the very least, you’ll want to rule it out as a possibility. The way to do this is to conduct a mold test of your home (or office). Surely calling in a contractor can be prohibitively expensive, especially for an initial test of this kind. So, it’s time to turn to the internet, where a quick string search will turn up a variety of home mold testing kits that you can perform yourself.

What makes the MoldCheck Test Kit System unique among all of these other kits is two fold. First, each kit includes multiple tests, while all of the other leading home mold testing kits only allow you to perform one test with the contents that are enclosed. The other test kits will require you to send a sample to their laboratory for an additional fee of $40 or so to identify what kind of mold you are dealing with. Even after that is completed, you still have no idea where to begin the remediation process.

The MoldCheck test kit includes multiple tests so that more than room or space can be tested at a time. Once the test is completed, you will be able to conduct a visual comparison which will easily lead you to the source of the growing mold. What’s more, it’s largely irrelevant to you what kind of mold you might have because any excessive mold contamination should be dealt with regardless.

The MoldCheck test kit is also the only system to use test films in lieu of cumbersome plastic petri dishes so that a dry testing method can be employed. There is no need for agers or complex testing solutions; each test film can be activated just by using a few drops of harmless activator solution encased in tiny vials and included in each kit. There is no need to guess how much solution you will need to use; the proper amount is already proportioned in each vial.

Since mold spores are deposited from the air, you will need to stir up the air above each test film and allow for the air to settle. After an hour, you will then bring the films from each room to a table. Here, you will deposit drops of activator solution onto each kit (one vial per test film) and then close the films and use the plastic press to spread the liquid into a circle. After a five-day incubation period, you will be able to see mold colonies growing in the form of dark colored fuzzy spots. You will be able to count the colonies therein and ascertain which films (and, incidentally, which rooms) have the most growing mold. It’s that simple. From there, the remediation process can begin. Use the swabs included in each kit to perform a surface test in much the same way that an air test is performed.

MoldCheck will soon be offering a kit that includes a moisture meter. Using this device will allow you to probe walls, floors, and other surfaces looking for damp spots. Since mold thrives in the presence of moisture, once you’ve found a damp spot using the moisture meter, you will also have found the source of mold as well.
